Moving to Lamorinda from San Francisco — what to expect

I've had this conversation a zillion times. A couple in the city, maybe with a baby on the way, or a toddler who needs a backyard, or a mortgage payment that feels tighter every year starts asking questions about the East Bay. They've heard about Lamorinda. They're curious. And they're a little nervous about leaving behind the life they know. If that sounds familiar, this post is for you!

I moved to Lamorinda myself after years in Alameda, and I work with SF transplants regularly. Here's an honest look at what changes, what surprises people, and what you'll wonder how you ever lived without.

The lifestyle shift, in plain terms

My take: The families I've worked with who make this move almost universally say the same thing six months later: "We wish we'd done it sooner." The combination of schools, space, sunshine, and community is genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the Bay Area at this price point. If you're on the fence, come spend a Saturday morning in Lafayette at the reservoir or at the Moraga Farmers Market. The move tends to sell itself.

Which Lamorinda town is right for SF transplants?

Lafayette tends to be the easiest transition. It has the most walkable downtown, the most dining options, and a BART station, so it scratches the urban-access itch while delivering everything Lamorinda does best. Orinda appeals to buyers who want privacy, views, and a prestigious address with BART access. Moraga is the pick for families who want the most space, the quietest streets, and don't mind driving to BART.

I wrote a full breakdown of all three towns if you want to go deeper check out my post: Lafayette, Moraga, or Orinda --which Lamorinda town is right for you?
